City Summer School

Taking days out hearing about specific areas of work:

Finance

An opportunity to visit some key financial institutions and spend time with professionals who will explain their job role as well as give an overview of the workplace.

Enjoy a presentation at The Bank of England. Discuss what is happening in the economy at present and go inside a few of the largest City banks to see what they do and what the future holds for this industry.

The insurance and shipping industries are huge.  Take a look inside Lloyds of London, the heart of the world’s insurance market. See brokers and underwriters signing slips and putting down lines.  Hear from the people who work in these industries and visit them in their offices.  Could you do this?  Would you want to? And what are they looking for in new recruits?

Accountancy is not boring!  You may be surprised to find that it is not just about numbers!  Visit one of the world’s largest accountants to see what their work is like and what skills they are short of in a client facing role.

Media

An opportunity for students to visit various employers and media-related companies to find out about their work, the aims of their institutions, and how to get jobs within their sector.  This day will focus on areas such as PR and Marketing.  We will visit companies such as Bloomberg who have a fascinating insight into the way in which media affects all aspects of business in the modern world.

Law

A real chance to find out more about the different areas of law, including discussion time with legal professionals in a variety of settings.  Visit and have a presentation at a world class solicitor’s office to see how the world of corporate law works.  What is the magic circle – how do you break into these top class firms? See a trial at the Old Bailey and then have a chat with a barrister.  What is it really like to defend anyone who needs it? What is the difference between corporate and criminal law, and which one would suit you?
